I WANT CANDY!

Will your kid get sent to the principal's office for eating a Tootsie Roll or some M&M's?

Will multiple offenses lead to suspension or expulsion?

The answer is yes if the Obama administration has its way.

Now before you anonymous Libs start leaving your nasty comments, just hold your horses for a second.

I'm not advocating that kids should eat an over-abundance of sweets!

But for God's sake, let our kids be kids!

Sure more and more kids are obese these days, but is it because of what they get out of a vending machine at school?

I say no.

If the Obama administration really wants kids to slim down, here's what should be outlawed:

• Xbox 360
• Nintendo Wii
• Playstation 3
• Nintendo DS
• Movie DVDs
• Flat-screen TVs
• And anything else that encourages kids to sit on their asses playing video games and watching mindless crap on television instead of going outside to play.

I say push your kids out into the sunshine, give them a Snickers bar and show them how to play tag, flag football, cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, and other fun, healthy and high-energy games.

Oh, dear -- I think I just heard the sound of 10,000 Libs stroking out over the idea of such horrible activities that promote violence, racism and non-gender-specific role-playing.

Sorry, Libs. I'll try to do better.

Nothing in the article you link to says anything about being "sent to the principal's office" or "lead to suspension or expulsion" for a student's food choice.

With obesity and childhood diabetes as prevelent as it is in this country, I should think adults would welcome any program that promotes healthy eating.

Apparently American parents are unable to do so on their own, else why would we have this problem.

The government actually DOES have control over our children. Try neglecting them to the point of endangerment, abusing them, or keeping them out of school without any alternate form of learning, and the government will step in and take them away.

"Letting kids be kids" without some supervision?

I know about 5 year olds who, without supervision, would eat chocolate bars and cheetos for breakfast if an adult weren't there to stop it.

That's letting "kids be kids" without supervision and guidance.

It's also setting kids up for childhood diseases.

Shaw, obviously PCC was being humurous on the "sent to the principles office" bit. At the same time though, you appear to have skipped the first paragraph of the article.

"The U.S. Agriculture Department would be given the power to regulate all food sold in schools -- including vending machine snacks -- when Congress renews child nutrition programs, the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee said on Tuesday."

Your attempt to defend Obama falls flat. They want to control what our kids eat in school. (read the paragraph above again)

What's amusing about this is libs raised all kinds of Hell when Bush wanted to mandate that kids actually be able to read and write when they graduated but are okay with The One passing judgement on what our children should be eating?

Parents and school authorities have failed in their responsibilities when they have allowed soda pop, candy bars, and other snack foods to be the ONLY food vending machines carry in schools.

Children will always go for the sweet, the salty, and the fatty as their food of choice. And when there is no other choice, those children are forced to make choices that will set them up for diseases.

Would any sane parent allow that behavior in their home? Do you, if you have children, allow them to choose junk food over nutritious food at home whenever they demand it?

Responsible parents I know do not, and are angry that schools allow the soda companies and snack companies to teach our children bad eating habits.

Don't make this into "I'm defending Obama" discussion. I'm talking about the dereliction of responsibility of parents and school officials in not protecting CHILDREN.

And I had absolutely no objection to Bush's mandating that children learn to read and write. The problem with his No Child Left Behind was they it wasn't funded, and it became a financial burden on school budgets.

This isn't about President Obama. This is about taking care of our children and providing healthy choices.

Something American parents have apparently failed at. Look at the stats on obesity and childhood diabetes.

Shaw, you missed the entire point of my post.

First, I'm not advocating over-eating for kids. Second, kids need to become more physically active as part of a healthy lifestyle. And third, parents -- not government! -- must take control of their children's well-being.

I suppose I could have spelled it out exactly this way in the first place to make it easier for you Libs to comprehend, but even you, Shaw, should know by now that I use humor and satire to get my point across in most of my posts.

Isn't that why you visit me from time to time? Because I'm so gosh darned entertaining?

Oh, and one more thing, Shaw, in case you think I'm ducking the idea of government intervention completely:

When parents put their children's lives in danger, whether by neglect or physical abuse or worse, the government absolutely has a role in stepping in to provide safety and justice for the children.

And where did you get the idea that I said kids should not be supervision?

How can I possibly entertain you utterly and completely if you don't read my posts carefully, Shaw?

As a mom of many kids, I see the importance of teaching our kids to police themselves. I don't want a Nanny State watching us all of our lives. What part of FREEDOM do they not understand?

You gotta out think kids these days PCC. They all are in cahoots on ways to get over on parents and teachers. I defeated my kids by getting the Dance Revolution video game and telling them not to play it too much because all that racket pisses me off. I can't get them off it. And they're in great shape now.

Besides, with all the UV rays and global warming, who in his right mind wants his kids going outside anyway?

Chuck: "What's amusing about this is libs raised all kinds of Hell when Bush wanted to mandate that kids actually be able to read and write when they graduated"

Yes. The main opposition comes from the NEA. The last thing they want is any sort of accountability.

They want children left behind. Because to actually teach our children well, they'd have to do some hard work.

Truth: Yes. Global warming, Nazgul, meteors, giant hawks. Each of these threats to our children as real as the other.

Shaw, first of all your defense for taking parental rights away is a tired retread from every other liberal argument for governmental control. Where does this argument end? Should we have monitors on the beach to see if I have sunblock on my kids? Or someone in grocery store parking lots to see if parents have a hold of the hand of their small children? These are no more rediculous than the notion that the federal government needs to come into schools and tell our children what to eat. This is an arguemnt only a liberal brain can understand.

As far as the "unfunded mandate" nonsense for No Child Left Behind, this was one of the dumbest stances by liberals ever. That is saying a lot. We have been funding schools to educate our children for decades. For a change we were demanding that they actually do it. The NEA didn't like it, it meant the teachers would all of a sudden have to start doing their jobs.

Over here in the UK, teachers have been known to inspect the contents of lunch boxes and confiscate anything that they deem 'unhealthy'.

Then, they allow Domino's pizza to give away free pizza to the weans, (West of Scotland slang for children!!), with vouchers when they visit. (The school gets cash from Domino's pizza for this little PR exercise).

Fast forward a few weeks and Krispy Kreme give the kids doughnuts.

I shit you not.

Chuck,

If you re-read my two comments--and I ask that you please do, you will not find anything that says I believe the government should "take parental rights away."

All I have done is state the problem and acknowledge the fact that both parents AND schools have been derelict in allowing children to make poor food choices, so much so that childhood diabetes has tripled since the 1970s.

PCC, I completely agree with you about children and exercise and how important that is in controlling obesity.

I don't know if this is true--I'll have to look for it in Google, but I heard that some schools have banned children from playing tag at recess. The reason I heard that was given for this nonsense was because a child might get hurt playing tag, and for liability reasons it was stopped.

Nuts.

Again, PCC and Chuck, I have simply pointed out some of the reasons that explain why childhood obesity and childhood diabetes is so prevalent in our country.

Of course parents should be in charge of their children's diets and exercise; but look at the condition our future generations of Americans are in, and you'll see that parents are NOT taking care of their children--or at the very least are too lazy to teach children healthy food choices.

We eradicated the childhood scourge of smallpox through government mandated vaccinations. Who can argue that that was a bad thing.

Not all government intervention in the cause of keeping America healthy is evil.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Here's one link for the school that banned playing tag at recess.

When I googled it, I found that schools in Colorado and California also banned playing tag for other reasons--one was that it degraded the children's self-esteem.

Seriously.

I've got news for these Nanny State idiots....The main reason for this childhood epidemic of obesity is that families don't sit down to nutritious meals as before. Both parents are working; then, as soon as everyone arrives home, it's grab a quick bite and run out to soccer practice, music lessons, etc.

And, as mentioned in this post, children today are shut ins of sorts. They don't get exercise through neighborhood free play. Indeed, even recess at school has been usurped by P.E. classes -- at all grade levels. And, of course, children are glued to TV screens and computer monitors, as are many of their parents, for that matter.

I do find it interesting that children are more obese today when schools have mandatory and structured P.E. classes. My theory: when you make children feel as if good, healthy movement is a REQUIREMENT, they rebel and see the exercise promoted in P.E. classes as "the establishment."

I find even more alarming than the rates of obesity the fact that so many young people today have no muscle tone -- even if they are slender and physically fit. Case in point: the lifeguards at the swimming pool I frequent.

At this stage of my life (late 50's), I'm carrying more weight than I would like to carry and more than I've ever carried before. But as all my doctors have noticed, I have excellent muscle tone. I didn't build up all that muscle at the gym, I can tell you. I built it up via physical labor (housecleaning workouts!) and lots of swimming and bike riding as a child -- not to mention jumping hurdles that my dad constructed in our yard.

One more thing....There is some evidence to show that hormone-fed chickens are responsible for a lot of child and teen weight gain. Lots of health-conscious young people eat a lot of chicken these days. Not to mention all those microwave meals!

I could say more, but I've blabbed on long enough to make my main points.

It wasn't that long ago that kids were disciplined for having rubbers in their pockets and now it's encouraged in some schools (not all thank God.)

SK It's not a question of what's good for the kids. It's a question of an ever expanding ever-intrusive Federal Government. The government that governs least governs best.

Dr. Dave: Don't forget that under the current administration, it is considered unpatriotic to carefully review or even read Congressional legislation.

Shaw said: "Here's one link for the school that banned playing tag at recess."

I've heard Rush Limbaugh rant about this subject. Amazing, something you two agree on.

The "liability reason" part is pretty outrageous. Yet another reason we need to ban frivolous lawsuits.

i.e.: if you do something to yourself, you are barred from a lawsuit to try to get others to pay for your own mistake.

Someone asked me the other day, "Joe, have you always been this heavy?"

I answered, "No...when I was born I only weighed 8 pounds."

Actually, I never started gaining weight until I was in my 50s and stopped being an active Youth Director.

I used to play two games of football every week, two tennis matches, one or two raquetball sets and three times per year back packing trips.

Then I sat down and stayed down.

Now I look like a whale out of water.

Kids need to be strenuously active. So do adults.
